TRAINSPOTTING analysis 1

Trainspotting opening scene and toilet scene

The opening scene puts us straight into alignment with Renton as the first shot is at him. The scene immediately opens in the middle of the action and straight involves the audience where Renton and Spud are being chased down the road and the sound and camera movement is used by moving away from and with the characters so the movie catches the fast tempo from the beginning. Another thing that aligns the audience with Renton is his voice in the background made as being non-diegetic. He has a speech "choose life" and lists things that means traditional life for him and it's made in cynical way and have ironic and and satirical point of view and a tone. He lists things like work, career, family, kids, bills, food, TV, friends, ageing, death and he says that he rejects to "choose life". The lighting in this scene is bright, realistic and colourful.

Firstly we see Renton running from the cops and subsequently looking at the audience and spontaneously laughs which is funny but scary at the same time. Next the shot shifts when in Renton's background speech is heard 'choose friends' on Renton's group of "friends" playing football, there are introduced their core characteristics as well as their names in subtitles. First is showed Sick Boy sneaky tripping someone over and complains it wasn't him, then Begbie just using physical brutality, Spud not catching the ball showing failure, and lastly Tommy stuck in the corner while Renton says "choose rotting away at the end of it all" which foreshadows his miserable ending.
Overall the film form is alive as the editing is hyper-kinetic, in mise-en-scenes is use lots of colours and vivid domestic interiors because they didn't want to make a social grim movie so in many situations even when the room seems dirty, damaged, dark, there is always some aspect that gets audience rid off the imagine of grim mood such as light from the outside, bright colours, posters,.. Renton's tone of narrative is neutral and we see the opening from his point of view and actually even later on we are still focused and in alignment with Renton's character.
astly the scene in the opening sequences representing the theme of family is showed when Renton is at his parent's house sitting at the table with his mother and father. The use of film form here is very depressive and grim with shadows and ugly environment. This all gives us the feeling of no escape as we can see that there are no windows or even lights and the setting they are positioned is in tight framing in the corner however on the right we see light up kitchen. Looking at the characters Renton is sitting back to audience in the darkness and parents have shadows from their bodies.

'The worst toilet in Scotland' scene
The toilet scene is at the beginning of the movie and so gives us some foreshadowing. The theme here I think is mainly escape- that is shown through surrealism and fantasy in the scene. In the beginning is Renton getting suppositories from a drug dealer. The interiors in the scene is dirty and the entire flat just looks like a wreck of a house and makes the atmosphere dark. The next scene is a complete opposite as in here Renton is walking along colourful flats looking more energetic than in previous minutes. Renton continues walking into a bar and the camera switches from his close up to point of view of others people looking at him and in the background is heard non-diegetic talk of Renton is his mind.
Image result for trainspotting the worst toilet in scotlandWhen he enters the room labelled by text 'the worst toilet in Scotland' it begins to be surreal and fantasy. Firstly the text gives a comedic tone and then the surrealism gives feeling that anything can happen which takes away the grim genre. There is no music used only some sounds of fly that are definitely used non-diegetically but try to seem as diegetic sounds and make the scene as bad as it seems like. Later the scene gets even worse when after he uses the toilet he tries to find the suppository in blocked toilet bowl filled with dirty water, also we get lots of close ups on Renton and his emotions and reactions with which we can relate. The same non-diegetic music in the background as at the beginning begins when the surrealist part starts which is when Renton sinks into the toilet. From there he gets into the ocean where he finds the suppository, this metaphor can represent escaping from reality or foreshadowing for Renton's escape in the end.
