The Hunger Games

In the ruins of the former North America is the country of Panem, with the capital city named Capitol and other 12 districts. As a punishment for a rebellion in the past, every year in the Capitol there is a competition called Hunger Games, where each district has to send one boy and one girl to the area, where they fight to the death until there is only one survivor. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to represent her younger sister in the game, is from District 12 and her male tribute from the same district is Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Katniss has to rely mainly on her instincts, as opposed to her opponents who have been preparing for this moment their whole lives. The Hunger Games is a sci-fi/thriller movie directed by Gary Ross that is based on Suzanne Collins's novel of the same name and it is also the starter of The Hunger Game film series. This film represents a gloomy visualisation of the future in which society is commanded by wealthy elites which are trying to make it up as a new world order where the wretched and poor majorities live under people with power and wealth. As a thriller movie, there is used intense or dramatic music and dark lighting to create different moods, perspectives, and attitudes in the different scenes.

For the music there are used non-diegetic sounds, mostly music, that are in the background and diegetic sounds that are used carefully to perfectly fit to the scenes. For example, on the opening ceremony in the Capitol there can be heard music that plays along with diegetic sound of clapping, cheering and shouting of people. During the whole movie is used more non-diegetic music such as melodies without words. They are mostly used in intense or sad moments. There are also diegetic sounds that characters actually hear such as the most important whistling of Katniss and other characters. The mise-en-scenes are shot at three different places. The first one is Capitol where everything looks expensive and people wear nice colorful and distinctive clothing. Lighting is bright to show how good their life looks like and so their clothes. People are always happy and smiling and enjoy watching drastic Hunger Games where other people die. The second place is in district 12, where it is poor, dirty, and dark. Costumes of people are plain and bronze to show their poor and oppressed life situation. They are mostly sad or afraid of choosing them to an area of Hunger Games. And the final one is the area in the forest. There is light again brighter and there are lots of greens even when the mood of Katniss and others is dark because of fighting and dying. Characters contrast this bright place by are wearing dark clothes. Most of the scenes are shot during day and only some of them such as in the forest is in the night where it is lighted up by either fire or 'moonlight' even when they are in the area and this world is not real.

There is the scene when people from Capitol chooses tributes for the Hunger Games in District 12. It is the moment when Katniss volunteers as a tribute instead of her sister. There are used many close ups on Katniss, her sister, and other people to show us their reaction on this situation, and also close ups on things that are happening to catch our attention on these little things. There is also used tracking shots as they are moving quickly and the camera follows their actions. As a sound is there used normal diegetic sounds like tapping shoes while walking or microphone sound and as a non-diegetic is only occasionally heard quiet background music. Lighting in this scene is darker to show the poorness of the communities or in the districts. Clothes are also plain and darker, which is done by lighting. In the moment when Katniss and Peeta stand next to the woman from Capitol, her clothes are this time not that bright and colorful as it is in other scenes, this all is because of darker lighting in this scene.

The other interesting scene is, when Katniss is already in the area and finds a friend, little girl named Rue. Rue shows her the whistling that mockingjays, type of birds, repeat. As it is set in the forest, the lighting is bright, even when characters wear black clothes, to make that scene not that dark and a bit peaceful and happy. For sound is used diegetic sound of characters and birds whistling. There are used a few close ups to show characters' reactions and also pans, where the camera moves between tree crowns when we hear birds whistling.

A film that I chose for comparing to The Hunger Games is a movie called Passengers. I want to use this film as the main character is again Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss from The Hunger Games) and also because it is also thriller. Passengers is a film about a routine space journey to a new home where two hibernated spacecraft passengers are awakened 90 years earlier than planned due to a failure. While reconciling to the fact that they will be forced to spend the rest of their lives aboard a luxury ship, Jim (Chris Pratt) and Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) find that there is more than friendship between them. Until they reveal that the whole ship is in enormous danger. Jim and Aurora are now the only ones who can save the lives of 5,000 sleeping passengers. There are many elements of the thriller and drama which catch the spectator's attention same as in The Hunger Games.

There are many similar things in The Hunger Games and Passengers such as in the scenes are mostly used intense music. For example in the scene where Aurora finds out that Jim woke her up intentionally. There are used many close ups on Aurora and her reactions towards this information and along this is played intense non-diegetic music in the background. There are also used tracking shots on Aurora when she is angry and breaks things, the camera follows her actions. The lightening is sometimes bright, in good moments, and sometimes darker when something bad is about to happen.
